Home Brewing Equipment

Just as a good chef needs a well-equipped kitchen to create his masterpieces in, the right home brewing equipment is necessary if you’re planning on brewing your own beers at home. The extent to which you get involved in the hobby will usually determine the type and amount of equipment that you will purchase. Obviously the best equipment and home brewing kits will not be cheap. It is suggested that you purchase a basic started kit until you know for sure that you want to dive full force into the hobby.

The following is a list of home brewing equipment which is absolutely essential if you are planning on brewing your own beer at home:

Brewing guide – you will want to educate yourself about the brewing process before you start brewing your own beer and a good brewing guide will get you started on the right track. Most home brewing equipment comes with one but occasionally this might be lacking so make sure that you have one.

Brew kettle – since the boiling of the beer is a critical step in the home brewing process, a brew kettle is a necessary piece of home brewing equipment. Usually, the ideal pot will have a 5 gallon capacity and is manufactured from stainless steel.

Fermenters – another key to producing good home-brewed beer is keeping it in a clean environment as it ferments. This will keep the beer free from exposure to bacteria and dust particles in the air.

Funnel – if the fermenter that you use is a large glass bottle, then you will need a funnel to pour the beer into it. Most funnels that are used in home brewing are 8″ or larger in diameter which makes them a lot easier to clean and sterilize than most other funnels used in the kitchen.

Siphoning equipment – these items help you to transfer your beer into bottles or from one fermenter to another without exposing it to airborne bacteria or dust particles in the air.

Straining tools – strainers are used to strain hops and whole grains out of the beer once it is ready to be fermented. Another viable option to consider here is a grain straining bag and is a more economical choice.

Bottling accessories – bottles, bottle caps, and bottle cappers all fall into this group of home brewing equipment. Obviously, the finished product will need to be bottled for chilling and storing.

Cleaning and sanitizing items – good cleaning and sanitizing habits need to continually be practiced when you are home brewing your own beer. Bacteria that attaches itself to the equipment can seriously affect the taste of your beer, so it is essential that you always clean and sanitize it in between uses.

Once you have brewed a few batches and are thoroughly engrossed in the hobby, you might want to consider the purchase of the following home brewing equipment as it will help you brew even better beer:

oHydrometer – measures beer density before and after it ferments

oThermometer – must have a range of 40
